ah few eats - Hong Kong

Am I introducing a new segment? Perhaps... I don't know how much of a budget I have to try a whole variety of eating establishments in a regularly scheduled way (unless some rich, good-looking sponsor comes out of the blue and into my life), but it does seem to make sense though. When one thinks of Ah few, "eating" is not far behind "sublime beauty" or "intellectual genius" in terms of a list of descriptive adjectives/actions. Sarcasm aside, my first post under this new blog concept for me will be a reflection of who I am as a person, and what I deeply believe eating out should be all about: honest, cheap, and most importantly damn tastey! I present to you all this overlooked jem of a "stall(?)"!

Original Congee - Located inside the T&T Milliken Food Court:

Okays, The photo above is basically composed of Combo 1 ($5.20) with one addition and one substitution. The Minced Beef Congee + Plain Rice Noodle Rolls Combo, which if you ask nicely you can subsitute Minced Beef Congee for the Tang Jai Congee (which has a lot more ingredients, like octopus, pork rind, and other goodness). I also added an order of Ja Jeurng (Fried Paste) noodles because I was just that hungry after a long day at UTSC *shudder*.

Now, I may not be from Hong Kong or China, but I do know from my experience that congee quality in Toronto is pretty damn good (no complaints from me, coming from where I used to live) but its the small details that put this place above the rest. One of the most important (and basic) principles of good congee is that the congee is always piping hot and this place always is. I had to sit there in the food court for around ten minutes just letting the congee cool down before I could really eat it without scalding my tongue. This ten minutes of course gives you time to eat other morsels of food, like the plain rice noodle rolls. As an extra special treat, their topping section for your rice noodle rolls (hot sauce, sweet sauce, peanut sauce... seasame seeds!) is SELF-SERVE, meaning... you can load up those steamed pieces of rice powder with however much you want... and anyway your heart desires!

The Ja Jeurng mein is pretty good, though it still pales in comparison to the ones I've had in Hong Kong. I just ordered it because I was craving it, and because its cheap ($3.99) Let's hope I don't get to go to HK again because I'll be one fat gay boy :(

Totally forgot to take a close-up photo of the rice noodle rolls, but they went pretty fast and my cell phone's picture quality blows anyways. Let's hope I still got the point across that it was an extremely satisfying meal! Now that another (better/cheaper) Asian supermarket opened up near this T&T's location, this supermarket has lost a lot of business. All the better since parking tonight was the most enjoyable experience I've had at an Asian supermarket/plaza... ever! This place still had a constant flow of people the entire time I was there, so I don't really have any fear that it will close anytime soon. I hope no one in their right mind would eat McDonald's again if they had the choice (though ah few does admit he craves mcnuggets once in a while) We should all consider ourselves extremely fortunate to be living in Toronto. Try it out! Ah few eats Hong Kong: complete!
