So one of my close friends likes asking me the question, "So what did you have to eat today?", which assumes two very important things: 1) I actually cook and 2) I cook something that would be interesting to share...
Today, she was right on one count, I did cook, but interesting? No, not really... But I haven't really had much of any "normal" blog entries. Today was a day that is in danger of becoming endangered: I was left home alone! Happiness, is not just a warm puppy, but also an empty house. For those who happen to have both a warm puppy and an empty house, well they are the truly lucky ones :)
The opportunity that one is blessed with when there is not another noisy, opinionated soul around, with regards to just musical freedom and volume, is a simple thing that I do not take for granted.
The majority of my day today was spent on painting one of the more treacherous parts of the house, an area where no buttocks is safe from the disgracing burn, yet strangely warm caress of the rug: the stairwell. People who know me probably know that I am not the most sturdy of statures, I trip over my own feet more often than any other object. Now picture this: me, holding a long extendable stick with a dripping wet paint roller attachment, standing on a rickety oversized chair, balancing on the steep incline of the stairs that are covered with slippery plastic... You are not wrong in thinking that this may not be the best of set-ups for me but if you think I fell, well... I NEVER! I surprised even myself, as I was actually expecting (and preparing psychologically for) a nasty spill.
There were a few close encounters and brief moments where a figurative sweat drop did develop on my brow but luckily nothing nasty happened. Personally, near death experiences make me hungry, so to celebrate my survival I ate. There is nothing worse than dying on an empty stomach (if I'm going to go, I might as well go out with style [ie] mobile crane lifting my metric tonne corpse out of the kitchen window because I can't fit through the door).
Past the snacking, I did make myself dinner following the KISS principle (simplicity; dinner pictured above): A sandwich, with a side ... all by my lonesome. The side was made with a mini japanese pumpkin that I cut up and stir fried with bits of leftover chinese BBQ meats. Japanese pumpkin is amazing. Besides being mega-healthy its texture is soft and you can even eat the skin. Flavour-wise its sweet and soaks up anything you choose to pair it with without losing its own natural flavours. The sandwich was made on one piece of toasted whole wheat seasame seed bread with a thin layer of mayo (mmm...) followed up with a small piece of lightly seared and seasoned chicken breast. I didn't have ANY romaine lettuce in my fridge (very strange because my mom practically lives off the stuff), so I got my vegetables via the preivously mentioned side. I finished off the sandwich with the other half of the piece of toasted bread but not before inserting two sunny-side up (with the yolk still runny) quail eggs on top of the chicken breast.
Picture above makes meal appear bigger than it actually was (the quail eggs were TINY). Runny, half-raw egg yolks are one of my favourite things (Note to self: Write own lyrics to that Sound of Music song). I just love busting them and letting the yolk run down all over whatever meat or other edible substance I have below it. Delicimaxxx...
Okay, this blog entry would not be complete without adding a photo of what took up the majority of my day (as you all should know): Painting! Here's a picture of the stairwell that emphasizes the two colour choices (I didn't choose them) and not the precarious height and danger of it... (definately not a hyperbole... yo)
The stairwell is the meeting point of the two colours that dominate opposite ends of the house. An olive green and a light beige are the colours that now exist where builder's white primer used to be for over three years. Colour is always better than no colour at all (builder's white is not considered a colour) and I hope that a new blog entry is better than no blog entry at all!

come and paint my house!!
ReplyDeleteahhh i feel very crummy. get to finally bum and catch up with my dramas =)
Wow. I wish I could choose colours for this house. My parents wouldn't allow anything but "white"... its like staring at an asylum half the time.
ReplyDeleteI fill my room with wall scrolls for that reason.
God I hate runny yolks... I'm sure you remember that time I fried eggs at your cousin's condo. THAT's how I like mine :)
ReplyDeleteI agree with Louise, I HATE runny yokes. Blame it on childhood and games of 'eat everything first before the egg so that when you do finally poke it, it doesnt get all over everything else.'
ReplyDeletethe food looks disgusting. i wanna vomit :o----
ReplyDeleteyou haven't updated your blog for a while... WAKE UP!
ReplyDeleteWhile I do not appreciate runny yokes as much as you, I can however, appreciate your ability to take simple ingredients and make them look desirable.
ReplyDeletep.s. I hope I am the friend you are talking about ;)
